"Alif" is the first letter of the Arabic alphabet. It is a consonant and is pronounced with a long "a" sound, like the "a" in "father." The letter "alif" has no inherent vowel sound, but can take on different vowel sounds depending on its placement in a word and the vowel marks placed above or below it. In Arabic calligraphy, the letter "alif" is often used as a decorative element and can be stylized in many different ways.
